Description
HUGHES, a world-leading provider of digital television entertainment, broadband services, satellite-based private business networks, and video and data broadcasting, reported revenues of $8.9 billion in 2002.

HUGHES is built on a legacy on innovation. In 1966, the first controlled landing on the moon’s surface was made by Surveyor developed by Hughes. In 1974, Westar the first U.S. domestic communications satellite was built by Hughes to provide continuous video, facsimile, data and voice communications service throughout U.S.A. In 1976, the first maritime communications satellite, ‘Marisat’ developed by Hughes, linked ships on the Atlantic, Pacific and Indian Oceans to shore.

HNS, a unit of HUGHES, is the world's largest provider of broadband satellite network solutions for businesses and consumers, with over 400,000 systems installed in more than 85 countries.

With the opening of the Indian economy in the early 90s, HUGHES was attracted by the long-term potential of the emerging software services market and chose to set up a subsidiary in India to supplement HNS' R&D efforts.

HSS began its operations in New Delhi with a team of about 20 professionals, and was initially focused on developing software solutions in the areas of VSAT-based networks for voice and data, cellular wireless telephony, packet switching and multi-protocol routing. In 1992, the first ground-to-air call in a commercial aircraft was powered by Hughes Software Systems’ digital communication system for Claircom AirOne Service. In 1994 the world’s first Cellular Digital Packet Data call completed over the public networks in North America, powered by Hughes Software Systems.
