ABSTRACT:
This paper provides an introduction of how Incipient Network Storage Platform (iNSP) software delivers nondisruptive data mobility services for Storage Area Network (SAN) environments. Data mobility is a broad term, but commonly used throughout the storage industry. Non-disruptive data mobility is defined as the ability to adaptively and fluidly move, copy and share data without any application or host disruption or downtime. This paper also discusses the subject of "data migration", a commonly associated event of data mobility. Data migration involves the movement of data from one physical storage array to another.
A comparison of traditional data migration approaches to an innovative new solution by Incipient is also provided in this paper. The comparisons outline challenges with today's host-based and storage-array based data migration solutions by companies such as Veritas and EMC. Important concepts and value propositions of iNSP software are clearly articulated when used for data migration purposes. iNSP allows users to reduce time, effort and costs when it's involved with such tasks as storage array decommissioning, application migration and volume reconfiguration.
